ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons women's basketball team saw its SSC Tournament run come to an end on Thursday, falling to the No. 4 seeded Florida Southern Mocs by a score of 84-70.
A back-and-forth opening quarter kicked off the game. Lisa Michaelsen's three-pointer and a basket by Emma Egan gave the Tritons a 5-0 lead, and the team held the advantage through the first six minutes until Florida Southern evened the score at 10. Jaylen Ostenson's triple broke the tie, but the Mocs responded with an 8-2 run to close the quarter and take an 18-15 advantage into the second.
The visitors grew their lead to as many as 10 after scoring nine of the second period's first 11 points. The 10-point lead remained intact near the halfway point, but the Tritons used a 10-2 scoring surge shortly after to cut the deficit to two, highlighted by eight points from Ostenson during the run. The two teams went back and forth for the final three minutes to keep the margin within a single possession, but a last-second heave went in to give Florida Southern a 42-37 lead at the break.
The Mocs had a strong start to the third quarter, jumping back out to a double-digit lead after a 16-4 run through the opening five minutes. After trailing by 14 after three quarters of play, the Tritons cut the deficit to 11 on two different occasions to start the fourth. Florida Southern countered and extended its advantage back out to 16, but a three-pointer by Ieva Korzane with just over two minutes remaining again cut the gap to 11. The visitors notched five of the final seven points to complete the 14-point win.
Korzane had 25 points to lead the Tritons, while Ostenson finished with 17. Egan also added 15 points and nine rebounds. Michaelsen blocked two shots on the defensive side to give her over 100 for her career.
The Tritons will await the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, March 8 at 10:30 p.m. ET.
