Box Score ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons men's tennis team picked up a non-conference victory at home oN Wednesday, defeating the visiting New College of Florida Mighty Banyans by a score of 5-2.
Eckerd won two of the three doubles matches to open the day and claim the early point. Mario Kirkov and Konrad Fischer earned a 7-5 victory at No. 2, while Marshall Hulett and Adrian Gheorghe picked up a 6-4 decision to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead entering singles play.
Four of the six singles matches went in favor of the Tritons. Batu Ataseven won in straight sets at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0, while Amirali Ghavam also secured a straight-sets victory at No. 3 by scores of 6-3, 6-2.
Hulett and Kirkov each prevailed in three sets to help seal Eckerd's 5-2 win. Kirkov rebounded from a first-set loss and claimed the second-set tiebreaker, 7-5, to force a third set. He closed out the match with a 6-1 win in the final set to earn the victory at No. 1. Hulett battled through two tiebreakers at No. 5, opening with a 7-5 tiebreak win before dropping the second set by the same score. He secured the match with a 10-6 victory in the third set.
With the win, Eckerd improved to 1-1 and will return to action next Tuesday when it hosts No. 25Â Rollins Tars men's tennis.
