Women's soccer drops home opener to No. 18 Columbus State

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons women's soccer team was defeated in its home opener on Sunday, falling to the No. 18 ranked Columbus State Lady Cougars by a score of 2-1.

The first half featured a strong defensive presence from both teams as the Tritons and Lady Cougars combined for just four shots in 45 minutes of action. Eckerd accounted for three of those four looks, seeing the first two soar off target in the first 15 minutes. In the 19th minute, Freija Aflenzer broke the scoreless deadlock after seeing a ball towards the net deflected into the goal to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead. The one-goal advantage remained intact through halftime.

Columbus State controlled the shots category in the second half, firing off 11 to Eckerd's one. The Lady Cougars drew even with a tally in the 61st minute before sending in the game-winning score with just over a minute remaining in the contest. Ava Costa had the lone attempt on target for the Tritons in the second half. Zoe Brasher totaled three saves.

With the loss, Eckerd drops to 1-1-2 on the season. The team will be back in action next Saturday for its conference opener vs. Barry.
