TAMPA, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons women's soccer team picked up its third straight conference win on Wednesday and moved into a tie for second place with a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Spartans on the road.
The Spartans controlled the ball early on and put up a 4-0 shot advantage through the first 15 minutes of action.
Olivia Ozbolt fired off the first shot for the Tritons in the 24th minute before
Jasmine Gallo missed right later in the half. Eckerd held Tampa without a look at the net for the final half hour of play, while
Madi Winn stopped the lone shot on goal for either team as the game remained scoreless heading into halftime.
Despite the first two attempts coming from the Spartans to begin the second half, the Tritons held a plus-two advantage in shots through the final 45 minutes. The first three looks for Eckerd came within a three-minute span, with
Sylvia MohrSting collecting the first shot on goal for the team in the 67th minute.
Freija Aflenzer accounted for three of the team's five shots in the second half, and on her third attempt put one in the back of the Tampa net after taking a pass from Kailani Cassaza in the 83rd minute. The Spartans sent off a strike on the mark in the final seconds, but Winn made the stop and the Tritons held on for the 1-0 win.
With the win, Eckerd improves to 6-5-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the SSC. The team will close out the SSC regular season slate at home vs. Lynn on Saturday.
