ST. PETERSBURG -- The Eckerd Tritons women's soccer team collected its fourth straight conference victory on Saturday with a 1-0 win over the visiting Lynn Fighting Knights. The victory moved the Tritons' record in conference play to 6-2-2, making it the highest win total in SSC action since 2002.
The first half featured a defensive battle as the two teams combined for just four shots in 45 minutes of action. Eckerd posted three of those four attempts, with
Freija Aflenzer sending off the lone strike on target for the team. Lynn's lone shot was also on the mark, falling into the hands of
Madi Winn. Both teams remained scoreless entering halftime.
Each team saw its fair share of opportunities in front of the other's goal in the second half. Three total shots went off in the first 10 minutes of play, with Aflenzer firing off her second look on target. The two teams traded shots before Winn notched her second and third saves of the contest in the 70th and 74th minute to keep the game tied. Over the course of the next 10 minutes, Eckerd out-shot Lynn 5-1 during that span, with the fifth and final attempt resulting in a goal from
Amy Woodhead on a pass by
Abby Knipp in the 84th minute. The Tritons held the Knights without a shot during the final six minutes to hang on for the 1-0 win.
With the victory, Eckerd improves to 7-5-3 overall and moves into second place in the SSC. With an Embry-Riddle loss or draw on Wednesday vs. Nova Southeastern, the Tritons will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
