ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Despite trailing for most of the game, the Eckerd women's basketball team made up a double-digit deficit with a 12-0 fourth-period run to down Tampa, 61-58, at the McArthur Center on Wednesday night.
The Spartans jumped out to an 8-0 start to the game. A Bella Green jumper stopped the run, but the UT controlled the first frame, taking an 18-8 favor. A 7-1 Tritons' run midway through the second frame pulled Eckerd within three before the Spartans took a 28-22 favor at the break.
Tampa used a 9-2 run early in the second half to take a 13-point advantage. The Tritons pulled within seven, but UT controlled the period, taking a 49-38 lead at the end of the quarter. UT went up by 10 with 6:59 left in the fourth. However, Eckerd kept the Spartans off the board over the next five minutes while going on a 12-0 run to take a 57-55 lead at the 2:03 mark, capped by a Martyna Kowalsa triple. UT pulled within a point, but Eckerd made its free throws late while Green came up with a critical block on Tampa's last possession to seal the win.
