COLUMBIA, SC - Following a back-and-forth second half, the Eckerd men's basketball team got a clutch triple late, which helped seal a 69-62 victory over Benedict (SC) in the season opener on the road Friday night.
Eckerd and Benedict traded baskets to start the game before BC went on a 12-2 run to go up by nine with 5:43 left in the opening half. Eckerd trimmed the deficit to six at intermission, trailing 31-25.
After trailing by eight, the Tritons went on a seven-point scoring run early in the second frame to trail by one. A 13-3 run gave EC a 48-41 edge at the 12-minute media timeout. However, the Tigers rallied to take a three-point lead at the five-minute mark. Eckerd and Benedict traded leads late, but a Wyatt Triestman triple with 1:40 left put the Tritons up for good, as EC knocked down its free throws late to seal the win.
