TAMPA, Fla. - The Eckerd women's soccer team handed the Spartans their first loss of the season, defeating Tampa by a score of 2-0 at Pepin Stadium on Wednesday night. The win marks the first time the Tritons have defeated the Spartans since October 2, 2002.
The Tritons had an early 1-0 jump when Tampa scored an own goal off of an Eckerd corner kick in the seventh minute. Tampa had a couple of good chances to equalize in the opening frame, but Cadence Talbert turned aside two shots to keep the Triton lead heading into halftime.
Sierra Hudson had a chance to increase the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, but her shot was stopped by the Spartan keeper. Freshman Jillian Doerger extended the lead to two with her first career goal in the 75th minute for a 2-0 Triton favor. Talbert turned aside another late in the game to preserve her clean sheet for the Tritons to complete the 2-0 upset over the Spartans.
