No. 9 Eckerd Tops Badgers

MOBILE, Ala. - A 20-point opening frame propelled the No. 9 Eckerd women's basketball team to a 63-41 road victory over the Spring Hill (Ala.) Badgers on Saturday afternoon. 

Lauryn Vieira opened up the game with eight points in the first quarter as a major contributor to the Tritons' comfortable early lead. Eckerd worked up to a double-digit favor of 11 before Spring Hill added a pair of points to shorten their deficit back to single-digits at the end of the opening frame, 20-11. 

Eckerd struggled from distance in the middle two frames, going 0-for-10 from the 3-point line combined in the second and third quarters. Despite the cool offense, Eckerd held a 33-23 lead at the half and a 49-29 favor to end the third period. The Tritons bounced back in the fourth quarter with an opening 3-pointer by Elina Olsson. Spring Hill silenced a five-minute period of scoreless action at the 3:16 mark to shorten their deficit to 16 (56-38)  before Eckerd brought the lead back to 22 to end the game 63-41.

NOTES AND NUMBERS 

  • Vieira led the Tritons with 14 points. Kowalska rounded out the double-digit scoring with 12 points. 
  • Bella Green led with eight boards, while Vieira and Kowalska grabbed six apiece.
  • Vieira also added five assists and three steals. 
  • Eckerd had 13 points off turnovers on nine steals. 
  • The Tritons outscored the Badgers bench 29-7. Kowalska led the bench with 12 points as part of a 6-for-8 night from the free throw line. 
  • Olsson scored a career-high nine points and grabbed a career-high four boards.

Eckerd travels to Colorado next weekend to face off against Metropolitan State University of Denver on Friday at 3:00 PM (MST) and Colorado Christian University on Saturday at 3:00 PM (MST).
