No. 9 Tritons Fly Past Eagles

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In a 3-pointer shootout, the No. 9 Triton women's basketball team defeated the Embry-Riddle Eagles 76-64 at the ICI Center Saturday night while fending off the Eagles' third-quarter scoring flurry. 

After a pair of traded baskets, the Tritons went on an eight-point run early in the first quarter. Lauryn Vieira scored six points in the opening five minutes of the quarter as EC took a 25-16 lead after the first quarter. Nicole Scales shot a perfect 3-for-3 from long distance in the first half. Sofia Persson scored 20 points in just as many minutes in the opening half as the Triton took a 51-37 favor at intermission. 

The Eagles fought back to tie the game at 56-56 following a 15-2 run. After nearly three scoreless minutes, Hannah Wentworth hit a pair of threes to regain the Tritons' lead. Persson hit a hook shot under the basket, and Scales ended the quarter with a layup at the buzzer for a 10-0 run going into the final frame leading 66-56. Scales and Wentworth kept the run going into the fourth quarter with a pair of 3-pointers. With under 10 seconds remaining, Scales made a jumper to secure the 76-64 victory.

NOTES AND NUMBERS

  • Persson led the team with 24 points, while Wentworth and Scales both tallied double-digit figures at 18. 
  • Vieira flirted with a triple-double with 10 assists, eight points, and eight rebounds.
  • Eckerd netted an impressive 13 3-pointers, shooting 44.8 percent from beyond the arc. Wentworth made six 3-pointers and Scales had four. 
  • Scales and Ragnheidur Einarsdottir grabbed six rebounds each. 

UP NEXT
The No. 9 Tritons return home Wednesday to faceoff against conference rival Florida Southern for their Teal Out game with a 5:30 PM tipoff.
