Tritons Down Bobcats, Pick Up Third Straight Shutout

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd women's soccer team shut out the St. Thomas (Fla.) Bobcats by a score of 1-0 on Sunday night at Johnson Field.

The first half was an even match between the Tritons and the Bobcats, as they fired four shots in the first 45 minutes.

The Tritons turned up the pressure in the second half, registering eight shots. Bobcats' goalkeeper Isabella Penaranda turned aside four Eckerd shots on goal, but she could not fend off the Tritons' offense much longer. The Bobcats' defense blocked a late corner kick by Kaia Senecal. Senecal recollected the ball and sent in a cross to sophomore midfielder Aisling Spillanewho headed the ball in the top left corner for the game-winner in the 69th minute.

The Tritons' defense was on lockdown, only allowing two shots in the second half and shutting out their opponent for the third straight game.

QUOTABLE

"[I was] delighted with our third straight shutout," stated interim head coach Luke Sheekey '10. "Our defense is starting from the front. I'm very happy with how the units are working and how all the defenders are playing minutes and contributing to the shutouts. Zoe [Brasher] was fantastic again today, and when called upon, she was ready to come off her line or make a save. Overall, I am pleased with our third straight win and ready to get into SSC play."
