No. 10 Tritons Top Moccasins

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Eckerd College women's basketball team picked up an exciting win, taking down the Moccasins, 72-60, thanks to a second-half surge at the George W. Jenkins Field House on Wednesday night. 

After the Moccasins put the initial two points on the board, the Tritons jumped out to an early lead, dominating the first five minutes of the game. Nicole Scales started the scoring for the Tritons with a free throw, followed by a layup. After trading points, Eckerd began to pull away, with points from Sofia PerssonLauryn Vieira, and Hannah Wentworth, causing Florida Southern to take a timeout. Florida Southern closed the gap, as they traded baskets the rest of the quarter, with the Moccasins leading by one, 18-17, after one period. Florida Southern opened up the second quarter with three 3-pointers, gaining an eight-point lead. An eight-point run by the Tritons brought them to a tie before entering the intermission down by one, 32-31. 

An early seven-point effort to start the second half by Maya Price gave Eckerd its rhythm again, with Cirkeline Rimdal, Scales, and Persson scoring to put the Tritons ahead by seven. The Mocs chipped away, shrinking their deficit to two at the end of the third quarter, 51-49. Price added eight more in the final frame as Eckerd used an 11-4 run to pull away from Florida Southern 72-60.

NOTES AND NUMBERS 

  • Price led the scoring with 21 points while Persson (16), Scales (10), and Rimdal (10) added double figures as well. 
  • Price's four blocks put her to 14 on the season and 106 in her career, tying for third in program history with Tijana Brdar.
  • Price and Vieira pulled down eight boards each. Price also grabbed three steals, and Vieira had two. 
  • Vieira added nine assists. 
  • Eckerd outscored Florida Southern in fast break points 17-5.
  • The Tritons had an outstanding defensive night, with 38 rebounds and five blocks.
