FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A career-high 30-point day by
Maya Price guided the No. 10 Triton women's basketball team into overtime to hand the Sharks of No. 16 Nova Southeastern its first loss of the season, 93-83, on Saturday afternoon at the Rick Case Arena.
In the early goings, the Tritons and Sharks traded baskets. Nearly halfway through the first quarter,
Hannah Wentworth extended the Triton lead to four with a shot from beyond the arc.
Nicole Scales added a layup, along with a pair of free throws from
Lauryn Vieira, with Eckerd going up 16-8. NSU started to answer back at the end of the first quarter, as EC led 20-16. Nova Southeastern began to change the tide in the second quarter as Kyannah Grant brought the home team to tie, 20-20, for the first time since 8:40 in the first quarter at the eight-minute mark. An offensive effort by Scales, Price,
Sofia Persson, and Wentworth narrowed the Tritons' deficit to one going into the intermission down 36-35.
Price started the second half strong for the Tritons, blocking a Sharks' 3-point at the top of the arc and converting a fast break layup. Wentworth added another triple, causing the Sharks to take a timeout on the heels of a 7-0 Tritons' run. After a dominant start to the third quarter, EC's lead began to slip. Both teams traded baskets nearing the end of the third quarter, but Eckerd ultimately fell behind 56-54 going into the final frame. Less than 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, Persson was backed into a corner with one second left on the shot clock. After a quick timeout, Price made a layup and-one on the inbound pass. The teams swapped leads four times in the fourth quarter before Price hit a layup with 11 seconds remaining to tie the game 75-75 and send the game to overtime.
In overtime,
Cirkeline Rimdal started the ball rolling for the Tritons, as she tallied four points in the first minute. Once NSU added back with a 3-pointer from Maddie Frederick, EC went on a six-point run by Price and Scales.
