No. 11 Tritons Dominate Fighting Knights in Home Opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After a close first half, the No. 11 Eckerd women's basketball offense pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Fighting Knights 36-18 in the second half, to secure the 82-51 win on Saturday afternoon at the McArthur Center. 

The first quarter was an even match, with both teams trading points. The Tritons edged a five-point lead, 19-14, after the opening quarter. Lynn tied the score three times in the first half but could not secure the lead. The teams swapped runs in the second frame, with Eckerd taking a 36-33 favor at the break. 

The Tritons' 15-point run early in the third quarter gave EC momentum as they capped the period on a 14-2 run to take a 67-42 lead into the final quarter. Eckerd cruised in the final frame as they jumped to a 32-point lead late in the fourth, which was cut to 31 from a late Lynn free throw by Ella Fiore.

NOTES AND NUMBERS 

  • Sofia Persson led the way with 19 points, followed closely by Hannah Wentworth and Maya Price with 18 points each.  
  • The Tritons shot 100 percent from the free throw line in the second half, going 4-for-4. 
  • Price collected eight boards, improving her rebound average to 5.74 per game, sitting 18th in program history. 
  • Price tallied four blocks, moving her career total to 98, ranking seventh in program history. 
  • Lauryn Vieira posted five assists, with Persson and Nicole Scales following closely behind at four apiece. 
  • The Tritons shot 68.75 percent from the floor in the third quarter and 63.64 percent beyond the arc. 
  • Scales tallied the most minutes on the floor with 36, collecting seven boards and putting up five points. 
  • Wentworth shot 66 percent from beyond the arc, scoring all 18 of her points from 3-pointers.

UP NEXT
Eckerd begins another road trip next week, as they head to Texas to take on Angelo State University at 3:00 PM EST on Tuesday before heading to New Mexico Wednesday evening to face off against Eastern New Mexico University at 7:00 PM EST.
