No. 5 Eckerd Drops Close Contest to Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Despite a lead in the fourth quarter, the Triton women's basketball team dropped their first contest of the season on the road to Angelo State (Texas), 70-63, as the Rams rallied in the final minutes at Stephens Arena on Tuesday afternoon.

The Tritons began the first quarter up 6-2 with two layups from Maya Price and another from Nicole Scales, but Angelo State quickly evened the score before taking a 20-17 lead to end the quarter. The Rams went up by 14 to start the second period, but nine straight points pulled EC within six at the end of the half, 38-32.

Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant was the difference maker for the Rams, putting up 21 points on the day, including 11 points in the first quarter. The entire game was back and forth, as the EC and ASU knotted the score seven times and traded leads five times.

An 11-6 run to start the second half tied the score for EC as they ended the frame knotted up at 49-49. A Hannah Wentworth triple gave the Tritons a six-point lead at the 6:32 mark, but the Rams followed with a 15-2 run to take a 68-61 favor with a minute left. The Tritons had several possessions in the tail end of the game, but we were unable to convert to close the gap, as they fell 70-63.

QUOTABLE
"I thought Angelo State played well today. I was proud of our team for battling back from an early deficit. However, once we took the lead in the fourth quarter, we had too many costly turnovers that we couldn't overcome. We will look to get back on track tomorrow," stated head coach Paul Honsinger '98
