Harley Award Winners Kopko, Martin Highlight 2021 ECSPYs

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Seniors Drew Martin (baseball) and Sophia Kopko (women's soccer) received the highest honor an athlete can obtain at Eckerd College as they were selected as the James R. Harley Award winners at the seventh annual ECSPY awards at the McArthur Center on Friday, May 14.

The James R. Harley Award is annually presented to the male and female student-athlete that has demonstrated leadership and excellence in the classroom, on the field of competition, and in their community.

Martin is a four-year member of the baseball team, appearing in 30 games over his career with 14 starts on the mound while collecting five wins. The Tampa, Florida native helped lead the team to their first Sunshine State Conference Championship in 38 years in 2019. He was also a recipient of the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll and is Eckerd's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Vice President. 

Kopko is a four-year member of the women's soccer team, appearing in 41 matches over her career. The Phoenixville, Pennsylvania native has scored three goals over her career while contributing to 12 shutouts, including a 317 minutes scoreless streak in 2017. She also excelled in the classroom as a four-time recipient of the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll. Additionally, Kopko is Eckerd's SAAC President, a member of the Athletic Diversity Action Committee, and a Student Ambassador in the Admissions Department. 

The night also included the virtual induction of Eckerd's 2020 Hall of Fame class of Steve Balboni and Courtenay Becker-Dey. View their induction videos below. 

During the ECSPYs, Eckerd student-athletes presented the MVP Awards to their peers (see below for winners). The event's emcee was Assistant Director of Athletics, Bill Mathews. 

For the sixth straight year, women's tennis took home the William J. Mathews Academic Excellence Award, presented to the team with the highest GPA over the past year. Women's golfer, Laila Forstmane, and baseball player, Collin Bakken, were honored as the recipients of the Senior Scholar-Athlete Award presented to the female and male senior student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA.

Lisa Mets, the VP and Secretary of the College and Risk Manager, was honored with the "Friends of Athletics" award, while Tom Ashman was voted as the Professor of the Year.
