Tritons Fall in Five Sets to Embry-Riddle

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd volleyball team rallied twice to take the second and fourth sets, but untimely fell in the decisive fifth set against Embry-Riddle Saturday afternoon at the McArthur Center.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The opening set remained back-and-forth as the teams combined for 12 ties and four lead changes with neither team able to create more than a three-point lead. Embry-Riddle held a 19-17 advantage late in the set before the Tritons rolled off four straight points pulling ahead 21-19. However, the Eagles went on a 6-2 run to take the first set.
  • Eckerd raced out to an early 6-2 lead in the second set. The Tritons extended their lead to 16-7 following an 8-2 run capped by back-to-back aces from Sydney Case.  EC went on to take the set at 25-15 following kills from Asya Harris and Agata Sklepik
  • The third set mirrored the first as neither team was able to create more than a three-point lead. Embry-Riddle edged ahead late in the set at 19-16 and used a run of six straight points to take the set.
  • The teams traded rallies to open the fourth set before Eckerd rolled off four straight points to pull ahead 11-7. EC distanced themselves at 20-12 following a run of five consecutive points capped by a Sarah Johnshoy kill. The Tritons then utilized three-straight points to end the set at 25-16, sending the match to a decisive fifth set.
  • ERAU pulled ahead early in the final set at 6-3 before a Rachel Wisian kill, and Sklepik ace pulled Eckerd within one. The Eagles followed with a 7-2 run to pull ahead 13-7. EC got a quick two points before the Eagles got a kill and forced a Triton error to take the game 15-9.  
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Harris led the Eckerd attack with 16 kills while Johnshoy added 12.
  • Johnshoy also collected nine blocks as Eckerd posted a season-high 13.
  • The Tritons held Embry-Riddle to their lowest hitting percentage of the season at .178 percent.
