Tritons Top Frostburg State for Third Straight Win

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd women's soccer team collected its third straight win to open the season after a 3-1 victory over Frostburg State (Md.) on Sunday night.

After a weather delay of nearly two hours, Eckerd jumped ahead to an early 2-0 lead after Lashanti Williams and Victoria Grant netted goals in the 11th and 25th minutes. Mackenzie Maggio added a goal on a free kick in the 74th minute to give the Tritons a two-goal cushion for the rest of the contest.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Eckerd wasted little time getting on the board with a Williams goal in the 11th minute. Bobcat keeper Taylor Longworth came out to collect a loose ball after the Tritons worked the ball inside the 18. The ball deflected off the hands of Longworth and out to the feet of Williams where she riffled a long-distance shot into the far corner from just outside the box.
  • Grant followed with a goal of similar fashion in the 25th minute. Longworth again came out to collect a free ball, tipping the ball off to the left where Grant fired a shot from inside the box to the right post.
  • Frostburg State answered with a goal 10 minutes later. Brooke Shehade broke free on the endline sending in a ball to Audra Curtin at the top of the 18 who one-touched it into the back of the net.
  • The Tritons had another quality look on goal in the second half. During a series of four corner kicks in the 59th minute, Grant ripped a low shot but keeper Emily Faust was there for the save.
  • Mackenzie Maggio added an insurance goal in the 74th minute for the Tritons. After a handball outside of the 18, Maggio took the free-kick and perfectly placed a shot into the upper right corner for the goal.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Grant's goal was her second in as many games while Williams and Maggio added their first goals of the season. For Maggio, it was the first goal of her Eckerd career.
  • EC held a 12-6 advantage in shots with a 7-4 favor in shots on goal.
  • The Bobcats' goal was the first given up by EC this season as Casey Winn and the Triton back line combined to open the season with a 215-minute scoreless streak.
  • At 3-0, the Tritons are off to their best start to a season since 2014 when the team also opened 3-0.
