Tritons Fall in Five Sets to West Georgia

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Eckerd volleyball team bounced back twice to take the second and fourth sets but fell to West Georgia in five sets Saturday afternoon on the final day of the South Region Crossover.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: West Georgia 3, Eckerd 2 (19-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 9-15)

KEY MOMENTS
  • The opening of the first set began tight before Eckerd took a slight 10-7 lead. The teams stayed within two points of each other before the Wolves went on a late 7-1 run to take a 22-16 lead. Eckerd fended off the set with an Anna Jungjohann kill before UWG took the first set 25-19.
  • The Tritons jumped out to an early 7-4 lead before the Wolves evened the score at 7-7 on a three-point run. Eckerd responded with a 6-1 run to pull ahead by five at 13-8. EC's lead fluctuated between two and four points over the next stretch before UWG evened the score at 21-21. The teams then swapped rallies remaining tied at 25-25 before a West Georgia error and a Sarah Johnshoy kill gave Eckerd the set at 27-25.
  • West Georgia jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before Eckerd went on a 5-1 run to take a slight 8-7 advantage. The teams stayed within two points of each other before the Wolves went on a six-point scoring run to pull ahead 19-12. The Tritons managed to pull within one point at 22-21 on a Fernanda Reis kill before UWG took the set at 25-22.
  • Neither team was able to create more than a two-point lead for the majority of the fourth set. UWG managed to take a late 19-15 lead, but Eckerd responded to take a 23-21 lead following an Agata Sklepik kill. Eckerd took the set at 25-23 on an Asya Harris swing. 
  • UWG took an early 7-4 lead before Eckerd pulled within two points at 8-6 on a Sklepik kill. The Wolves went on a late 5-1 run to take a 14-8 lead. Eckerd forced a West Georgia error to stay alive at match point before UWG took the match at 15-9. 
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Luana Rezende posted a career-high 31 digs while Paula Hoffmann also set a career-high with 23.  
  • Harris led the Eckerd attack with 17 kills while hitting at a .361 clip.
  • The loss snapped a streak of eight straight wins for Eckerd at the South Region Crossover.

Eckerd returns to SSC play on Tuesday, traveling to Florida Southern for a 7:00 PM start.
