Williams’ Early Goal Lifts Eckerd Over Johnson & Wales

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – An early goal by Lashanti Williams was all the Eckerd women's soccer team needed Saturday night as they defeated Johnson & Wales (Fla.), 1-0, at Johnson Field. Williams netted the lone goal in the ninth minute while the Eckerd defense held the Wildcats to just five shots to seal the win.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 1, Johnson & Wales 0
Records: Eckerd 2-0, Johnson & Wales 2-1

KEY MOMENTS
  • Eckerd wasted little time getting on the board scoring in the ninth minute. Lashanti Williams received a loose ball on the left wing, dribbled free to her right, and ripped a bending shot under the crossbar and into the right corner from 25 yards out.
  • Stephanie Linton looked to add to the Triton lead late in the first half with two quality looks in the 33rd and 42nd minutes but both shots were saved by JWU keeper Kellie Fitzpatrick.
  • Eckerd maintained possession and worked the ball into the attacking third for the majority of the second half, especially in the final 10 minutes as Eckerd took three corners during a four-minute span. However, the Tritons were unable to obtain a quality look on frame.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Eckerd held a 9-3 edge in shots and 5-1 margin in shots on goal.
  • The Eckerd defense played particularly strong in the second half not allowing Johnson & Wales a shot in the final 45 minutes.
  • Eckerd held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks, with the first corner not coming until the 70th minute.
