No. 10 Barry Hands Eckerd Women First Loss of Season

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in the Sunshine State Conference opener on Saturday as No. 10 Barry handed the Tritons a 3-0 defeat.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Barry controlled the run of play early and generated several quality chances. The Bucs' first shot came in the 8th minute in the form of a direct kick followig an Eckerd foul. Molly Sharpe sent a solid strike under the crossbar, but Eckerd keeper Casey Winn punched it away.
  • Barry finally converted in the 22nd minute when Gabby Sanon slipped inside the six-yard box and one-touched a cross from Sharpe into the back of the net.
  • Eckerd looked to equalize minutes later on a cross from the right side to the far post. Madison Dilgard was able to head the ball but missed wide.
  • The Bucs struck again in the 39th minute on another cross, this one from Christy Grimshaw from the right side.  Her service found Sharpe inside the six-yard box, who finished for her fourth goal of the season.
  • A corner kick led to a third goal for Barry in the 56th minute.  Sarah Wignall drove the ball from the right corner to Grimshaw, who one-touched the pass inside the left post.
  • Gabriela Martinez came off the bench and created two chances for Eckerd in the 64th minute.  Her first sailed wide of the left post and her second was blocked by a Barry defender.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Barry posted its fifth clean sheet in six matches this season.  The Buccaneers have allowed only one goal thus far.
  • Barry held a 16-4 edge in shots and kept Eckerd from placing a shot on goal.
