ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd men's tennis team dominated in the top positions in both doubles and singles on Tuesday on the way to its first win of the spring defeating Walsh (Ohio), 6-3.
Eckerd (1-3) won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. Â
Will Stone and
Matt Spasic defeated Rodrigo Garcia and Vasily Vidamanov on center court, 8-5, while
Alasdair Knox and
Connor Masella earned a 8-6 decision in the second position.
The Tritons then closed out the Cavaliers in singles play with wins in each of the top three positions. Â Spasic made quick work of Garcia at No. 3 singles, 6-1 and 6-1. Â In the No. 2 position, Stone took down Filipp Kulynych in a tiebreaker in the first set, 10-6, before scoring a 6-0 win in set two.
Alasdair Knox then claimed the decisive point at No. 1 singles in a tiebreaker after he and Vidmanov split the first two sets. Â Knox fought off Vidamov for a 10-6 win in the tiebreak.
Robert Vazquez also earned a win at No. 4 singles over Jonah Carter after Carter won the first set, 7-5. Vazquez evened the match with a 6-3 win in the second set and outlasted Carter in the tiebreaker, 10-8.
The Tritons return to the court on Sunday against West Chester (Pa.) at 10:00 AM for senior day.
