ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd men's tennis team celebrated senior day with a flourish, sweeping West Chester (Pa.) at the Bullard Courts on Saturday morning.
The Tritons (2-3) didn't drop a set in either doubles or singles.
All three doubles teams won with scores of 8-4 as the tandems of
Will Stone and
Matt Spasic,
Alasdair Knox and
Connor Masella, and
Robert Vazquez and
Alejandro Vuconovic gave the Tritons a 3-0 lead heading into singles.
Eckerd had little trouble dispatching the Golden Rams (0-4) in singles play. Â Spasic had the team's most dominating effort via a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position. Â
Charlton Ogg picked up his first win by defeating Gavin Kenny, 6-1 and 6-1.
Vazquez and Vuconovic helped earn Eckerd its decisive points in the No. 4 and 5 positions. Â Vazquez took a 7-5, 6-3 win over Adam Courtemanche while Vuconovic held off Lucien DeCecco, 6-1 and 7-5.
Knox and Stone then completed the sweep in the top two spots. Â Knox was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles while Stone won at No. 2 singles, 6-4 and 6-3.
"I'm very proud of the men today," said EC head coach
Ben Maxwell. Â "They all played great. Â We had good energy from doubles and kept on the gas through singles."
Before the match, Eckerd honored its two seniors in Masella and Vazquez.
The Tritons return to the court on Tuesday, March 15, hosting Saint Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) at 2:00 PM.
