Strong Second Half Leads Tritons to Blowout of Saginaw Valley State

LAKELAND. Fla. – The Eckerd women's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss from Monday afternoon with a dominant win over Saginaw Valley State utilizing a strong second-half performance for a 29-point win on Tuesday at the Florida Southern Terrace Hotel Classic .

KEY MOMENTS
  • The opening four minutes remained tight as the teams traded baskets before Yarden Danan gave Eckerd a six-point lead after back-to-back 3-pointers at the midway point of the quarter. The Cardinals were able to cut the Tritons lead to two but a late Zoe Richards triple put EC up by five to end the quarter.
  • Mikayla Kuehne opened the second quarter with five straight points putting the Tritons up by 10. Saginaw Valley State then went on an 8-0 run to trim the Triton lead to 28-26 with just over five minutes left. Eckerd pushed its lead back to five in the closing minutes taking a 33-28 lead into the break.
  • The Tritons came out of the half aggressive utilizing an 18-4 run over the first five minutes of the third quarter to build a 19-point lead. Eckerd held a double-digit lead through the remainder of the quarter and entered the final period up 60-41 after a traditional three-point play by Richards.
  • Eckerd controlled the final quarter maintaining over a 20-point lead throughout and closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to take the 79-50 victory. 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Danan led three Tritons in double figures with a season-high 19 points. Richards added 15 while Kuehne scored a career-high 14.
  • Richards led Eckerd on the boards with seven rebounds while Abby Whiteye grabbed six.
  • Eckerd shot just 31.5 percent from the field in the first half but bounced back shooting at a 55.5 percent clip in the second half.
