ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - With her team's come-from-behind 3-2 win in double overtime at Saint Leo on Wednesday, October 3, Eckerd women's soccer head coach
Danielle Fotopoulos became the program's all-time wins leader.
Fotopoulos, in her ninth season at the helm, surpassed the previous record of 55 wins held by Siggi Nagele who coached the team from 1997 through 2003.
When Fotopoulos arrived at Eckerd, she inherited a program that had won a combined total of six matches in the previous three seasons and only one in conference play. Â Last year's Triton squad set a program record for the most wins in conference play and hosted a conference tournament match for the first time in school history.
Fotopoulos earned her record win in exciting fashion. Â The Tritons found themselves facing an early 2-0 deficit 15 minutes into the match against Saint Leo. Â Eckerd scored twice in the second half to equalize the match and force overtime. Â After a scoreless first overtime period, the Tritons earned a penalty just seconds into the second overtime. Â
Paula Astiazaran buried the shot, giving EC an important conference victory while securing the record for Fotopoulos.
A collegiate and international star in her playing days, Fotopoulos remains the NCAA's all-time goals leader with 118 during stints at Southern Methodist University and the University of Florida. Â She was also a member of the 1999 US Women's National Team that claimed the FIFA World Cup championship.
