Tritons Overcome Early Deficit in Double-Overtime Win at Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Fueled by second half goals from Becky Caraker and Stephanie Linton, the Eckerd women's soccer team produced a thrilling comeback Wednesday night as the Tritons topped Saint Leo, 3-2, in double overtime.

The Lions scored two goals in the opening 14 minutes; however, the Tritons responded with goals from Caraker and Linton in the second half while the defense locked down to keep the Lions off the board.  Paula Astiazaran then sent in the golden goal in the 101st minute on a penalty kick.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 3, Saint Leo 2 (2OT)
Records: Eckerd 6-3-1 (3-3 SSC), Saint Leo 2-7 (1-4 SSC)

KEY MOMENTS
  • Saint Leo wasted little time getting on the board scoring in the fourth minute as Carolina Solis-Deleon scored on a shot to the far post.
  • The Lions doubled the score 10 minutes later. In the 14th minute, SLU registered three consecutive shots in a four-second span with the third finding the back of the net after collecting the ball following a blocked attempt.
  • The Tritons attempted to counter the Lions' goal with a good look on frame just 30 seconds later on a Cameron Westmoreland shot but Lion keeper Julia Ortiz was there for the save. Eckerd was unable to get a good look on frame in the remainder of the half and entered halftime trailing, 2-0.
  • Eckerd came out of the half on the attack quickly working the ball into Lion territory. In the 57th minute, Westmoreland headed in a shot off Taylor Fu's corner but the shot hit the crossbar. Becky Caraker collected a failed clearance inside the box and rifled in a shot to get the Tritons on the board.
  • Linton found the back of the net for the Tritons in the 72nd minute in nearly the same fashion as Caraker's goal. Paula Astiazaran ripped a shot hit the crossbar with Linton finishing off the rebound to net the equalizer.
  • Eckerd didn't get a quality look on goal in the remainder of regulation. Casey Winn, meanwhile, turned back a late shot by Saint Leo in the 88th minute sending the game into overtime.
  • Just 28 seconds into the second overtime, Lashanti Williams made a run to goal and was taken down in the box giving Eckerd a penalty kick. Astiazaran took the shot and struck a low ball inside the right post for the golden goal.
