WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Eckerd men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season on Wednesday with a visit to Rollins, falling 8-1 to the 28th-ranked Tars.
Will Stone returned to the court and partnered with
Matt Spasic to continue the freshmen tandem's impressive doubles run. Â Stone and Spasic handed Francesco Racanelli and Ziad Melhaoui an 8-4 defeat in the No. 2 position, improving to 12-2 on the season.
"I'm very proud of Matt and Will," said EC head coach
Ben Maxwell. Â "They won a huge doubles match. Â It was really nice to see Will healthy again. Â The guys stepped it up and played a great match."
Rollins (9-9, 3-3 SSC) took the other two doubles contests for the lead heading into singles play, then won all six singles contests.
Eckerd dropped two tiebreakers in the first sets of
Eddie Lewis's match at No. 1 singles and Stone's match at No. 3 singles. Â Both went on to fall in their second sets, 6-2.
The Tritons (8-8, 0-7 SSC) will play in next week's Sunshine State Conference Championships at IMG Academy in Bradenton.
"We have had a good regular season," Maxwell said. Â "I am pleased with everyone's performances this year. Â Our effort has been very high-class. Â We have things to work on but we are starting to gain some confidence and that's great to see."
