ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Triton men's basketball team hits the road for the first time this season and the women look to continue their hot play as Eckerd visits Embry-Riddle (Fla.) for a pair of games today in Daytona Beach.
ABOUT THE EAGLES: Embry-Riddle, a provisional member of the Sunshine State Conference, is off to a very good start in the new season with three straight wins including a 60-58 victory over Rollins on Wednesday. Â ERAU outscored the Tars, 19-7, in the fourth quarter for a comeback victory. Â Sabrina Whiting and Lauren Ellenburger each scored 21 points in the win over an SSC opponent. Â Whiting leads the team with 16.3 points per game and shoots 52.9 percent from 3-point range.
TAKE IT AWAY: The Tritons have made a living off of getting steals and creating turnovers in the early season, averaging 12.7 steals per game while forcing opponents into an average of 21.7 turnovers per game. Â
Victoria Vine has been the catalyst on the defensive end, tallying 17 steals so far this season including a career-high seven on Wednesday in a win over Florida Tech.
KEY MATCHUP: One area of weakness for Eckerd so far has been rebounding as the team has a -9.7 margin on the glass entering today's game. Â ERAU has been strong in the same category, out-rebounding opponents by an average of 4.3 per game. Â The Tritons need to keep the Eagles - who grabbed 19 offensive rebounds in Wednesday's win over Rollins - from creating second-chance opportunities.
ABOUT THE EAGLES: Embry-Riddle won its first two games of the year before falling to Rollins, 92-85, on Wednesday. Â The Eagles aren't a very deep team with only eight players averaging 10 or more minutes per game, but they get excellent production from their regular rotation. Â Skyler Hogan (17.7 ppg), Dalton Barnes (16.3 ppg), Shaquan McArthur (16.3 ppg) and Dillon Graham (14.0 ppg) have all proven to be scoring threats so far this season. Â ERAU has also been an incredibly strong rebounding team with a margin of +15.3 on the glass.
CAREER NIGHT: Senior
Kevin Walsh had a career game on Wednesday in a loss to Florida Tech, scoring 22 points while knocking down seven 3-pointers against the Panthers. Â Last season, Walsh posted the second-highest 3-point total in a season in program history with 85.
KEY MATCHUP: Simply put, the Tritons need to be able to finish. Â Eckerd has seen two double-digit second half leads disappear in its last two games, both three-point losses. Â If the Tritons find themselves in another tight game tonight, taking better care of the basketball and getting higher-percentage shots will be vital.Â
