Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - With early goals allowed in both halves, the Eckerd women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Barry University in its final outing of the 2016 season.
Eckerd (7-9-2, 2-5-2) conceded its first goal in the 7th minute after Amanda Traynor found Sarah Wignall's feet just inside the 18-yard box. Wignall, unmarked by Eckerd's defense, turned and finished a shot in the lower left corner of the goal.
Despite two close chances for the Tritons in the 17th minute, shots by Ashley Kreinbring and Sydney Tiiman were unsuccessful. Tiiman slipped a shot past Barry keeper Paula Forero, but the ball ricocheted off the left post and Eckerd was unable to put in the rebound.
Moments later, Kreinbring had a clear look at the frame after receiving a pass on the left side, but her strike missed high.
The Buccaneers scored an insurance goal early in the second half after Molly Sharpe took on several Eckerd players in the backfield. Sharpe broke free of the defenders and put the ball away in the 51st minute of play.
The Tritons were unable to create any scoring chances threatening enough to narrow the lead. Eckerd finished the match with just four shots to Barry's 20.
Goalkeeper Casey Winn wrapped up her standout freshman campaign ranking first in the conference in saves with 96. Winn also capped her debut year tied for third place in program history for shutouts in a single season (6). Her goals against average for a single season (1.11) earns her another third-place spot in Eckerd's record book.
Freshman Olivia Ross-Johnson finished the year leading the team in goals (7) and points (15).
The Tritons will lose seniors Monique Elliott, Leah Chisolm and Jana Spengler but with 15 returning players, the young team looks to build on the foundation laid this season.
