Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. - With a shot at redemption, the Eckerd women's soccer team faced Florida Southern Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup.
After a loss to the Moccasins earlier in the season, the Tritons battled to a 1-0 victory and improved their record to 7-7-2.
"Our team played with heart and executed our game plan," EC head coach
Danielle Fotopoulos said. "I am proud of our team."
The lone goal and eventual game-winner came just six minutes into the game off a set piece from freshman
Ashley Kreinbring. The shot was taken from the right wing and marked Kreinbring's first collegiate goal.
"Getting her first goal of the season on a set piece was rewarding for her and our team," Fotopoulos said. "Once we went ahead, it was important for us to stay organized defensively."
Florida Southern (1-7-1) continued to battle after the goal with six straight shots but Eckerd goalkeeper
Casey Winn came up with three key saves to keep the Moccasins off the board. Â She finished the night with four saves for her sixth clean sheet of the season, one short of tying the program's single-season record.
Eckerd controlled a majority of the possession in the second half to maintain the lead. Despite several dangerous chances behind the Eckerd back line, Florida Southern was unable to find the back of the net.
Kreinbring finished the night with four shots while
Kayla Gray tallied three. Junior
Abby Sanchez made an immediate impact on the field, holding the ball up front for the Tritons.
"It was a good team win for us tonight," Fotopoulos said. "Now we have to focus on preparing for Nova on Saturday."
Eckerd resumes conference play on Saturday at 7:00 PM on the road at No. 14 Nova Southeastern.
