Tritons Drop Twin Bill to Fighting Knights

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College softball team dropped the final two games of a three game series to Lynn University on Saturday afternoon, 2-1 and 3-4.

The Tritons honored five seniors before the start of the double header. Brittany Mitchell was the lone four year member of the team while Erin Dixson, Carolyn Griffin, Sydney Dinelli, and Amber Hay each transferred in for their final two years. The group of seniors helped the team to the winningest two seasons in program history, shattering countless records.

Dixson was tagged with the loss in game one as a low scoring battle between the two teams ensued. The senior struck out a season high five batters while scattering five hits and allowing only one earned run.

Hay toed the rubber for game two, falling to 16-7 on the year while issuing two strikeouts.

Game one – Lynn 2, Eckerd 1

The left hander, Francias Olexa of Lynn pitched a quick game allowing five hits in seven innings against the Tritons.

The Fighting Knights got on the board first, tacking two runs up on the board off of a suicide squeeze gone wrong when the ball got loose in the infield.

Carrie Shere broke up Olexa's no hitter in the bottom of the fourth when she sent a liner up the middle. Kaycie Duncan then added a hit of her own in the fifth but remained stranded on the bases.

EC collected three hits and their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Mitchell singled through the right side, scoring Chelsea Armstrong who doubled to center field.

Game two – Lynn 4, Eckerd 3

Lynn got on the board early pushing one run across in the top of the first. EC remained scoreless through four innings until they broke through in the fifth.

Hay sent a single through the left side and was moved into scoring position off a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by freshman, Dana Paul. Mitchell then knotted the game up sending a laser up the middle through the infield.

The Lynn bats came alive in the top of the sixth as they mustered four hits plating three run to take a 4-1 lead over the Tritons.

Determined not to go down without a fight, Kiana Sladicki and Hay were able to cross the plate off the bats of Paul and Mitchell, bringing the score to 4-3. The Fighting Knight defense then ended the game on a diving play in the outfield, picking up the sweep.

Mitchell was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate in game two while Hay nabbed two hits of her own.

EC will continue SSC play hosting the University of Tampa for a three game series beginning on Thursday. Game one will begin at 6 p.m. with a double header to follow the next day.
