ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's tennis program nabbed a large victory on the Dick Bullard Courts assembling its second shutout of the season against West Chester (Pa.) University on Thursday afternoon, 9-0.
The Tritons (4-4, 0-2) collected their second win in the past three days after taking care of business against Merrimack College on Tuesday.
"The team had a solid win today," said Head Coach,
Ben Maxwell. "After starting off with two close doubles matches, I was excited to see the men get fired up and take home the shutout."
The No. 3 doubles tandem of
Eddie Lewis and
Connor Masella forged ahead for their sixth win as a pair to remain undefeated on the season.
Earning their fifth victory as a unit were juniors
Yosua Adiyasa and
Frazier Springfield. Also walking away with a victory was senior
Stephen Felman who was paired with freshman
Victor Appelqvist. The Tritons swept doubles by scores of 8-6, 9-7 and 8-2, respectively.
Adiyasa manned the No. 1 singles slot and took home his second victory of the spring downing Jared Howatt of West Chester, 6-2 and 6-4.
Appelqvist grabbed his team leading sixth singles win in eight attempts as he and Springfield polished off straight-set decisions before No. 5 and 6 played out single pro-set format finals.
After falling behind in the first set of singles play, Felman showed tremendous fight and composure to battle back and take home the victory, 3-6, 6-4, and 10-3.
Lewis and Masella each earned an 8-3 singles victory against their respective opponents in the No. 5/6 slots.
The Tritons will prepare to host Bentley University on Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. scheduled start.
