ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – In their closest match of the season, the Eckerd College men's tennis team fell to conference foe Florida Southern, 6-3, on Thursday afternoon.
The Tritons (0-3, 0-2) were a game and a set away from taking home the match when the Mocs (2-5, 2-2) stole the victory.
"I couldn't be more proud of the guys fight today," said Head Coach,
Ben Maxwell. "We fought as hard as we could right until the end of the game and were so close from taking home the win."
Sophomore
Eddie Lewis swept in his doubles and singles appearances. Along with his partner
Jonathan Cheng, the pair took home the lone doubles victory of the day and defeated FSC, 8-5. Lewis improved to 3-0 on the season competing in doubles.
In singles,
Victor Appelqvist was on fire as he battled from behind to take down the Mocs in the No. 4 slot, 7-6 and 6-0. For the freshman, the win marked his first singles victory of his young career.
Lewis took home the other singles match as he took down FSC's Derek Bell in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-4.
"Lewis and Cheng had a great match at No. 3 doubles today and Appelqvist continued to grow as a player, showing us that we are making huge progess and can hang tough with some top level teams," added Maxwell. "We are looking forward to taking on Warner on Saturday."
Eckerd will take on nonconference Warner University starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.
