Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Katie Shafer celebrated senior night by scoring two goals, but it wasn't enough as the Eckerd women's soccer team fell to Florida Southern on Wednesday night, 4-2, at the Turley Athletic Complex.
FSC's Anna Griessler scored her team's last three goals for her first career hat trick as the Mocs (3-9-1) spoiled senior night for Eckerd's 11 seniors.
The match was scoreless until the 39th minute when Madi Colaw punched in a deflected corner kick from Sheila Ramos. Griessler then made it 2-0 in the 46th minute when she intercepted a clearance and fired a shot to the right post past
Angelique Ulmer.
Shafer struck shortly afterward to cut the deficit in half in the 51st minute, volleying in a cross from the right side from
Colleen Owen near the left post.
Griessler and Shafer matched goals again later in the half, with Griessler heading in a corner kick from Ramos in the 64th minute to make it 3-1 only to see Shafer and the Tritons answer less than a minute later when Shafer headed in a free kick from
Taylor Tippett.
Eckerd (4-8-2) had a couple of quality chances to equalize the match, but was unable to convert before Griessler completed her hat trick in the 75th minute after Ulmer's attempt to pull in a cross slipped through her hands to the feet of Griessler.
Before the match, Eckerd honored its 11 seniors - Shafer, Tippett, Owen,
Lauren Monce,
Shannon Estes-Larkin,
Corrie Bexley,
Rae Antenucci,
Michelle Spesshardt,
Abbey Walter,
Christina Rosetti and
Elena Madrazo. Rosetti made her first appearance in two seasons after being sidelined with injury while Bexley made her first appearance in goal, spelling Ulmer in the 75th minute.
Eckerd won the earlier match between the two teams this season by the score of 2-1 on September 23 in Lakeland, Florida.
The Tritons wrap up the regular season on Saturday as they host No. 15 Nova Southeastern at 7:00 PM.
