Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd Triton women's soccer team out-shot the University of Tampa on Wednesday night but a pair of first-half goals off of corner kicks helped give the Spartans a 3-1 win at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Tampa (8-2-2, 4-1) converted on two of its eight corner kicks in the first half in almost identical fashion to take an early lead, then added a late score after the Tritons (4-6-2, 1-5) pulled back within a goal.
It took little time for the Spartans to strike as Alison Robinson out-jumped the defense to head in a corner kick served by Miranda Gonzalez from the left side in the fourth minute. Gonzalez sent another corner to the far post in the 30th minute, and this time it was Lauren Moore who headed the ball past EC keeper
Angelique Ulmer.
Though the score didn't reflect it, the Tritons maintained possession for much of the match and in the second half in particular. Eckerd found its way inside the box on numerous occasions but was unable to convert until the 79th minute. A through-ball was sent to
Abby Sanchez, who tried to fight around her defender to get to the ball. Tampa keeper Sydney Ross dove to stop the ball, but lost it and
Taylor Tippett was able to touch it in from close range for her fifth goal of the season.
Unfortunately, the Tritons never got a chance to equalize the match as Korey O'Rourke got behind the EC defense on a through-ball from Hannah Watts and fired a shot past Ulmer to the right post in the 84th minute.
Eckerd held a 14-10 edge in shots for the match, including an 8-3 advantage in the second half.
The Tritons play their final road match of the regular season on Saturday as they travel to face Lynn University at 1:00 PM.
