Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – In an out of conference matchup, the Eckerd College men's basketball team took down the Sailfish of PBA on Wednesday night, 59-48.
Both teams struggled to find the net in the first half as defense was the name of the game. PBA was out to a quick start going on a 10-2 run against the Tritons. A quick pass from
Jerrick Stevenson to
Ray Darnell gave EC their first points of the game.
Shane Phillips ran coast to coast dropping in a layup and bringing the Tritons within six of the sailfish. Six minutes remained in the first half when
Altavious Carter threw up a deep trey from the corner that found nothing but net.
Kevin Walsh was fouled as he went up for a deep three and sank in all three free throws.
Trevon Young drove the lane and dropped in a layup with two minutes left on the clock. Stevenson ended the first half converting a layup turned three point play and sent the Tritons into the locker room, trailing 24-18.
Eckerd came out shooting in the second half.
Malcolm Brunner Jr. scored the first points of the half for either team as he banked the ball off the glass for two. Four quick points by Phillips brought the Tritons within two of the Sailfish.
Darnell was quick to throw up two points of his own and netted the game up at 26-26. Phillips drew a foul going up for a layup sending him to the line. Phillips did not disappoint sinking both baskets and gave the Tritons their first lead of the night.
PBA was within two of EC when Walsh dropped in his 35
th trey of the year with 7:19 remaining in the game. Three minutes later, Walsh threw up another three pointer giving Eckerd a six point lead.
A massive dunk by
Kendall Roberts gave EC their biggest lead of the night with less than a minute to play. The Sailfish tacked on two more points in the final seconds as the Tritons took home the victory, 59-48.
Eckerd improves to 10-8, 3-5 on the season. The Tritons will go head to head with Florida Tech (12-7, 2-6) for the second time this season on Saturday. In the first matchup, EC came out victorious over the previously ranked Panthers. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the McArthur Center.
