Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's basketball team fell on the road Wednesday night to No. 6 Florida Southern College, 80-62.
The Mocs were able to get on the board first, but with free throws by
Malcolm Brunner Jr. and a lay in by
Ray Darnell the game was tied up early, 4-4. FSC's Kevin Capers hit a three on the team's next possession to take the lead.
Jerrick Stevenson knocked in two free throws to bring his team within one.
Florida Southern then went on a 12-0 scoring spree spanning three and a half minutes to go up 19-6. The Tritons took their shots to keep it close but went 0 for 6 from behind the three point line in the first half.
Shane Phillips grabbed a steal and went coast-to-coast for two points.
E.J. Moody drove the lane for two on Eckerd's next possession trailing the Mocs by 15. The teams went into the locker room at halftime with Florida Southern holding a 36-19 lead.
Darnell came out on fire scoring buckets on Eckerd's first three possessions. The Tritons tried to shoot their way back into the game in the second half but fell short going 3 for 8 from three point land.
EC got back within 17 with a jumper from Phillips, but that would be as close as they would get falling to Florida Southern, 80-62.
Darnell finished the contest leading the team with 11 points and pulling down five rebounds. Moody ended the game with eight points and seven boards. Phillips and Brunner Jr. both ended with seven points each.
Eckerd (8-6, 2-3) will host Rollins College on Saturday. The game is slated to begin at 4 pm.
