Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – In a game that was delayed an hour and 30 minutes by lightning, the Eckerd College men's soccer team came up just short Friday night in a 3-2
defeat in double-overtime to the University of Montevallo.
The Falcons wasted no time getting on the board when Jeffrey Hessenberger put in the first goal of the match in just the fifth minute.
UM went up 2-0 in the 12th minute before the Triton defense shut them down for the next 89 minutes.
The Eckerd offense managed three shots on target in the first half, but none of them could find the back of the net.
Three minutes into the second half the story line changed quickly as
Nick Jackson scored his fourth goal of the season off of a penalty kick to bring his team within one.
The game wore on with both goalies making big saves to keep the game at 2-1.
In the 79
th minute,
Antonio Alvarez put in a brilliant goal to tie it up, 2-2. For Alvarez it was his first goal of his young collegiate career.
The teams were at a stalemate during the final minutes in regulation and headed to overtime.
Neither team managed to get off a clean shot in the first overtime period and headed to a second and final OT.
The contest ended in the 101
st minute when UM headed in the game winning goal to take the 3-2 victory.
Head coach,
Cristian Neagu, said of the loss. "We were down early and came back, I am very proud of that. It's a tough loss that the boys will learn from. We will work on some things this week and be ready for the next game."
EC will hit the road for a non-conference matchup with Florida Tech, Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
