Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – In the final game of the regular season, the Eckerd College women's soccer team and Barry University had a lot on the line Saturday with the Buccaneers coming away with a 3-0 victory.
The game was originally scheduled as the Tritons SSC home opener in September, but was postponed due to weather.
The matchup became the last conference game of the season and for Eckerd it meant the possibility of hosting a first round tournament game. For the Buccaneers, an outright conference regular season championship hung in the balance.
The Bucs got on the board early with a goal by Lavinia Nkomo in the 12
th minute to go up, 1-0.
Katie Shafer got off a strong shot as she tried to tie the game up, but the ball was deflected by the defense. The Tritons managed two more shots in the first half.
In the 29
th minute, Barry added their second goal of the game and went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The EC offense came out of the locker room with a ton of energy trying to move the ball down the pitch.
Hannah Peterson beat the defense sending a shot into the goal, missing just wide.
The Buccaneer offense put up their third goal of the game in the 77
th minute and the Tritons could not find the offense to comeback.
"I was proud of our girls, they worked hard tonight," said Head Coach,
Danielle Fotopoulos. "This game is in the books and we are turning our attention to Tampa on Tuesday."
Eckerd (8-7-1, 3-4-1) has qualified for the conference tournament which begins on Tuesday. The Tritons will be on the road as the No. 5 seed and will take on the No. 4 Tampa (12-3-3, 4-3-1) beginning at 7 p.m.
