Box Score
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – One hundred ten minutes of playing time was not enough to determine a victor as the Eckerd College men's soccer program and Barry University dueled to a double-overtime draw on Wednesday night at the Turley Athletic Complex, 1-1.
EC senior midfielder
Daniel Lopez displayed his deadly precision on a free kick for the go-ahead score while Barry countered with a goal from Thomas Coombes near the edge of the box, his third score of the fall.
Lopez delivered the go-ahead goal, his first of the season, in the 52nd minute of play shortly after the intermission and the Buccaneers' knocks on the door were answered 24 minutes later with the equalizer.
The Tritons (2-2-2, 0-0-0 SSC) were looking to boost their current position against the Buccaneers (2-4-1, 0-0-0 SSC) as the initial NSCAA South Region rankings were unveiled today with Eckerd holding down 10th.
Both teams had their chances in each overtime session despite a low-combined shot total (15 for Barry, 12 for Eckerd) on the evening.
Lopez potentially had his second goal of the match nullified as the ball was juggled by Barry keeper Johnny Rodrigues in front of his own net in the 64th minute of regulation. The ball squirted free and Lopez had a clean look, but his shot was quickly waved off by the officiating crew.
EC freshman forward
Shakeem Albouy jolted the offense off the bench with a pair of great runs down the field. He was emerging free for a breakaway before Barry's Lucas Rio Torto caught up and rode him out of bounds with no foul called.
On another occasion in overtime, Albouy streaked through the middle of the box for a header and the second ball deflection was nearly punched home by sophomore
Joe Swindell as the home crowd waited to erupt.
Barry reserve Patrick Drmola headed a pair of balls past the crossbar and Renzo Chavez pushed several crosses across the middle of the box untouched trying to find open teammates in Barry's attempt to score the game-winner past regulation.
EC senior goalkeeper
Toni Virtanen kept the Buccaneers at bay with three saves on the night, including back-to-back stops point blank in front of the net late in the second half.
Rodrigues saved a penalty kick try by EC senior
Nick Murawski in the first half after a hand ball was whistled on Michael Dodds in the box.
Both Eckerd team captains, junior
Dean Hobbis and senior
Mark Lee, were inactive tonight due to injuries along with senior starting defender
Anthony Brenner.
Tonight's match was a continuation of the Sunshine State Conference "Plus Four" scheduling with no impact on the league standings.
The Tritons continue the "Plus Four" schedule on Saturday on the road at newly-ranked and unbeaten No. 17 Saint Leo University. The match will get underway at 5 p.m. from Saint Leo with the women's contest to follow.
