LAKELAND, Fla. – Eckerd College senior forward
Darrien Mack was honored as a Daktronics Men's Basketball First-Team All-Region selection announced earlier today.
Mack, also a First-Team All-Sunshine State Conference pick this season, was tabbed through a selection process from the South Region's sports information directors. He is now eligible for additional All-American honors in the next stage of voting.
Mack is among eight first-time honorees on the 2012-13 Daktronics All-South Region Team and is included in seven of the 10 selected to help lead their team to the NCAA Championship South Region tournament beginning this weekend.
He was joined on the first-team ballot with Jaime Smith (University of Alabama-Huntsville), Zane Campbell (University of Alabama-Huntsville), Seth Evans (Florida Southern College) and Marcus Ruh (Saint Leo University). Smith was named the South Region Player of the Year.
Mack earned his First Team All-South Region honor after leading the SSC in both scoring (18.1) and rebounding (8.0), earning runner-up honors separated by just two votes in the SSC Player of the Year running.
On the season, Mack was a three-time SSC Player of the Week honoree and was selected as the
Division II Bulletin Player of the Month for January.
In addition to his scoring and rebounding, Mack was third in the league in both field goal percentage (56.3 percent) and steals (2.3) and made an SSC-best 177 free throws. The Panama, City, Fla., native, has recorded seven double-doubles and helped lead the Tritons to a 20-win season.
The third-seeded Tritons are departing campus this evening to the site of the NCAA Championship South Region where they await a first-round matchup against sixth-seeded and No. 12 nationally-ranked Benedict (S.C.) College on Saturday for a noon tip-off.
The 2012-13 Daktronics Men's Basketball All-America Team will be announced on March 21. The first-team members from each of the country's eight regions are placed on the national ballot with the Division II SIDs selecting first, second and third-team All-America honorees.
The D2SIDA All-America men's basketball team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition.
