ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– Fifteen talented programs, including four nationally-ranked schools, will assemble at the Eddie C. Moore Complex this weekend as the Eckerd College Softball Spring Invitational begins tomorrow afternoon in Clearwater, Fla.

Partnering with the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, 3n2 and WP Sports Consulting, Eckerd Head Coach Josh Beauregard and tournament director Melissa “Skeeter” Gentile is welcoming back all returning teams from last year's edition with the exception of Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) University.

Armstrong Atlantic has been substituted with the addition of No. 10 Columbus State (Ga.) University and the battle for the tournament crown is going to be a fierce one with each team guaranteed five games.

“We're excited to get started tomorrow and fans are going to be treated to some great softball this weekend,” said Beauregard, in his sixth year as Eckerd's head coach. “We want to extend a special thank you to all of our sponsors and the atmosphere is going to be great for everyone in attendance.”

“This is a big weekend for us early in the season,” he added. “Six games in three days presents an opportunity for us before we go into conference play.”

Joining the Cougars from the national rankings in the field is No. 9 University of Tampa, No. 14 Flagler College and No. 19 Barry University. Palm Beach Atlantic University and the University of West Florida are also back this season.

The Sunshine State Conference will be represented by eight of the nine league schools while Lindenwood (Mo.) University and Colorado Christian University will be making out-of-state flights.

A total of nine different fields are available at the Eddie C. Moore Complex, located on 3050 Drew St.

The first game will start at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and the final wave of contests will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's action runs from 11 a.m. starts to 6:30 p.m. while as many as six games will go on at the same time on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.

Live stats and a free audio broadcast will be streamed for all six of Eckerd's scheduled contests spanning Friday through Sunday.

The Tritons (3-1, 0-0 SSC) will face Georgia College & State University at 3 p.m. and Colorado Christian University at 5:30 p.m. in Friday's action.

Saturday will feature a pair of tests against Columbus State and the Sailfish of PBA before wrapping up against Lindenwood and Lynn University on Sunday.

The Tritons swept Ave Maria University to begin the spring and most recently, split against Southeastern University in their home opener to enter this weekend.

Junior pitcher Whitney Bernier (3-1, 1.56) is the reigning SSC Pitcher of the Week while freshman shortstop Kara Oberer (.600, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 4 BB) was the SSC Player of the Week, respectively.
