Box Score
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Sophomore
David Horsfield pitched eight strong innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four, as the Eckerd College baseball program defeated Florida Memorial University on a chilly Wednesday night, 6-1.
The Tritons (6-7, 0-3 SSC) and Lions (2-14 overall) met at the Turley Athletic Complex one day after heavy rains forced early postponement from Tuesday's scheduled contest.
In his third start of the spring, Horsfield was electric, starting the night out with four no-hit innings to tame the Florida Memorial offense.
After giving up a single to begin the fifth that spoiled the no-hit bid, he buckled down to induce a double play.
The 6-6 righty lowered his ERA down to 1.65 and the only run against his line was unearned after a pair of errors in the sixth inning. He faced four batters over the minimum and was efficient in a quickly-moving ballgame.
On the offensive side, the Tritons were patient against FMU starter Kevin Perez, waiting back on the righty's slow and deliberate wind-up to the plate.
Perez worked himself into plenty of trouble with three wild pitches, two hit batsmen and a pair of walks, as the Tritons reached him for four runs in four innings.
Freshman shortstop
Rowdy Andrews began the EC night with a ringing double down the left-field line. After moving up a station on a wild pitch, he was brought home by freshman
Adam Moreau, who ripped a single through the right side of the infield.
The Tritons were aggressive on the basepaths and took advantage of two runs crossing home plate on passed balls and another stemming from a wild pitch in the dirt.
Carrying a 4-0 lead going into the fifth, senior
Lee Spinelle added another run with a deep sacrifice fly to score Moreau, who reached on an infield single earlier in the inning.
EC would complete the offensive charge with one more run in the sixth following a leadoff walk by pinch-hitter
Shane Bishop. He stole second base and advanced to third on a groundout before freshman
Jake O'Rourke plated him with another sacrifice fly.
Sophomore
Kevin Plant shut the door in the top of the ninth with a pair of strikeouts while retiring the side in order.
The Tritons will entertain Florida Christian College on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Due to home basketball and home softball events, EckerdTritons.com can only offer live stats for the Saturday twinbill.
