Men’s Soccer Hosts University of Montevallo (Ala.) in Season Opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The campus will be abuzz tomorrow evening under the lights as the Eckerd College men's soccer program plays host to the University of Montevallo (Ala.) at the Turley Athletic Complex for a 7 p.m. affair.

Under the direction of third-year Head Coach Steve Magee, promising scrimmages against Clearwater Christian College and EC alumni in the grueling preseason have the set the stage for Friday's non-conference challenge.

Live stats and video/audio will be streamed live on EckerdTritons.com. Links have been posted on the team's schedule page.

The Tritons are coming off a strong postseason performance in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, not a given for any team due to six teams earning qualification.

EC's First Team All-SSC and First Team All-South Region senior defender Matt Duffy was appointed captaincy and will mobilize his troops against a team that was picked to finish second in the Peach Belt Conference only behind Clayton State (Ga.) University, another EC opponent in the near future.

The Tritons will look to continue their rapid ascent against the Falcons, a team that was speculated to have been able to creep back into the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top-25 Preseason Poll.

Montevallo put together a 12-5-4 overall record last fall that included a trip to the NCAA Tournament before falling in the opening round against Mars Hill College. Junior goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway is a returning Second Team All-South Region pick.

The Falcons hold a 7-2-1 edge in the series history against the Tritons, the latest being a 2-0 Montevallo victory on neutral turf last year in Valdosta, Ga. UM was ranked 13th in the nation at the time of the match.

Magee sat down with EckerdTritons.com briefly this afternoon to talk about the upcoming season. The video can be viewed here.
