ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Six members of the senior class were recognized as the Eckerd College women's soccer program helped them make their final stand in defeat at the Turley Athletic Complex against Florida Southern College on Wednesday night, 1-0.
Allison Dean,
Adrianna Garcia,
Dana Treat,
Meredith Mahoney,
Emily Johnson and
Miranda Rivera, were honored in a pre-game ceremony that included a handful of gifts as they stood at midfield with their loved ones.
Parents came to be with their daughters from as far New Mexico, Minnesota, Michigan and Maryland, after Treat's parents traveled from Rhode Island for an early ceremony on Monday against Florida College.
All six seniors were in the starting lineup for tonight's match, including Dean, a team captain who has been sidelined the entire year with a leg injury. Florida Southern graciously kicked the ball out of bounds on the opening whistle as she was helped off the field by her teammates.
Even though tonight's match for the Tritons (9-6-2, 3-4-1 SSC) against the Mocs and Saturday's scheduled contest at Barry University doesn't count towards the conference standings, a trip to the NCAA Tournament as one of the six seeds in the South Region is still at stake.
Behind a second-half hat trick performed by Kara Moore, the Mocs (6-6-3, 3-2-2 SSC) claimed a win earlier this season in Lakeland and picked up the sweep with the 1-0 victory on Wednesday.
FSC's Sarah Goolsby spoiled EC goalkeeper
Morgan Crescent's bid to set the single-season school record in shutouts in the first half of action. Goolsby sent a shot from 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net in the 17th minute, her third goal of the season.
Freshman
Fallon Vaughan played a great ball upfield as freshman
Abbey Walter unleashed a strong left-footed shot that was saved by FSC keeper Erin Moseley with about five minutes until halftime.
EC was limited offensively to Walter's lone shot in the first half.
Unfortunately, the Eckerd offense also stalled in the second half looking for the equalizer and the Tritons couldn't get another shot off against the FSC defense.
The Tritons wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Miami Shores at Barry. The SSC Tournament brackets will be released later that day. Eckerd is looking for the program's first-ever conference tournament seeding.
