Men’s Soccer Takes Down Warner University, 3-1

Box Score

LAKE WALES, Fla.Matt Knight scored two goals in a game for the second time this season, Matt Duffy added his first score of the year and the Eckerd College men's soccer team cruised past Warner University on Wednesday, 3-1.

The Tritons (4-1, 0-0 SSC) rallied to bounce back from their first loss of the season at No. 13 Montevallo (Ala.) College and are heading into a four-game home stretch that includes opening league play with momentum on their side.

Warner's early-season struggles continued as the Royals (1-4, 0-0 TSC) dropped their fourth consecutive match.

Knight continued to build on his impressive offensive resume, scoring both his goals in a five-minute span to begin the second half. He also torched Francis Marion (S.C.) University's defense for a pair of scores in the regular-season opener.

To date, Knight has booted five total goals on just six shots with three of those kicks going down as official game winners.

His first goal at the 46:54 mark knotted the match at 1-1 after Warner's Daniel Marrugo beat Eckerd's defense shortly after the opening whistle in the first minute and change.

Teammate Anthony Arico, who assisted both of Knight's goals, added his second helper of the game by threading a pass to beat the Royals' back line in the 50th minute.

Duffy gave the Tritons some added insurance as he built on to Eckerd's lead with another second-half goal. Freshman Dean Hobbis was credited with his first collegiate assist.

EC goaltender Toni Virtanen stoned the Warner offense after allowing the early goal, making three saves in another strong start.

The Tritons will open Sunshine State Conference play in front of its home crowd this weekend as Eckerd hosts Florida Southern College on Saturday for a 7 p.m. affair.
