Top-Seed Florida Southern Eliminates Women's Basketball in SSC Semifinals

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Southern's Emma Cannon had 24 points and 21 rebounds to lead the top-seeded Mocs to an 80-60 win over the Eckerd College women's basketball team on Saturday in the semifinals of the 2011 BlueCross and BlueShield of Florida Sunshine State Conference Basketball Championship.

Cannon, the SSC player of the year, had 19 points and 16 boards in the second half – helping FSC (24-4) outscore the Tritons 50-28 in the final 20 minutes.

Senior guard Ashley Lutz had 23 points for the Tritons (17-11), who tied the school's single-season record for wins. Lutz, who was named to the all-tournament team, also had three steals to set the school record for career swipes with 230. Lotte Tobiasen had 14 points.

Eckerd led 32-30 at halftime after holding the Mocs to 33 percent shooting in the first half. But FSC, led by Cannon and Taylor Maldonado (15 points – all in the second half), shot 51 percent in the final frame.

The Mocs had five players score in double figures overall. Michaela Hawley and Tanja Speaker each had 11 points, while Megan Dzikas added 10 points and nine assists.

It was the ninth straight win for FSC, which will face tournament-host Florida Tech at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the championship game.

It was Eckerd's fifth trip to the conference tournament semifinals and second in the last three years.
