Game 2 Box Score

AVE MARIA, Fla. – Freshman right-hander Kaitlyn Dougherty tossed a three-hit shutout to help the visiting Eckerd College softball team take a 6-0 win over Ave Maria in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The win helped the Tritons (8-12) salvage a twinbill split, as Ave Maria (5-8) took the opener 2-1 in eight innings.

In the second game, Eckerd scored three runs in the third inning and three in the fifth to take control. Dougherty (3-3) struck out five and allowed only six baserunners to complete her second shutout of the season.

Alex Sasso went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game and had three hits overall. Kirsten Cox added two hits and scored a run.

The Tritons nearly took Game One as well, taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. But Ave Maria got back-to-back hits to start the frame, and Samantha Crews scored on an error to tie it up.

Ave Maria won the game in the eighth on an infield single by Janet Holtfreter.

Eckerd had nine hits in both games to finish with 18 overall.

The Tritons will open Sunshine State Conference play next Saturday with a 4 p.m. contest at Barry.
