Marjorie Whitney Invitational Final Results

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.
Paul Henderson carded the low round of the day with a 76 (+4) for the Eckerd College men's golf program as it hit the links for the final time this fall by playing out the third round of the Marjorie Whitney Invitational at TPC Sawgrass on Tuesday.

Henderson (78-78-76--232) completed the team's fourth and final event of the fall in a tie for 19th to help the Tritons place eighth in the 12-team field. As a group, EC shot a cumulative total of 324 today, 13 strokes off the pace from their respective first and second-round team scores.

But the Pete Dye-inspired Valley Course and 25 mph winds wreaked havoc on the tournament's 12-team field as scores across the board were several strokes higher than Monday's first-day totals. Nova Southeastern University edged Barry University for the team title by a three-stroke margin.

Flagler College's Greg Mergel finished with an even-par score for the three-round event to claim the individual title.

Eckerd went into the day tied for seventh with Erskine College and St. Andrews University.

“Obviously, we would have liked to come down the finish line a little better,” EC Head Coach Bill Buttner said. “We were in a position to move up a little bit on the leaderboard in a three-way tie and weren't able to get it done today. The wind was whipping around and really exploited everyone's weaknesses.”

“Paul (Henderson) should have a good bit confidence after playing one of the toughest courses well, but this is hard as it gets on the college level,” he added. “Overall, we set ourselves up for a very good spring.”

Jeff Evanier finished his morning with a 78 and trailed Henderson by just one stroke once the final scores were tallied.

Evanier closed out his eye-opening fall with his first medalist title, a pair of top-25 finishes and led the Tritons in 18-hole scoring average at a 74.25 clip through 12 total rounds.

Senior Callum Georgallides tied for 35th while firing an uncharacteristic 87 with Luke Bobrowski (56th) and Greg Reilly (t43rd) each tallying 85's.
