AVE MARIA, Fla. – Senior pitcher Mackenzie Dawson broke the school's career record for games won as the Eckerd softball team swept the Ave Maria Gyrenes Monday afternoon on the campus of Ave Maria. The Tritons over-powered the Gyrenes in both games, defeating Ave Maria 11-3 in game one, and 14-1 in game two. Dawson now holds a total of 29 wins since the start of her 2007 campaign, breaking Sherry Howell's record of 28, which was set back in 1993.
The Tritons (12-26-1) started off hot in the first game, scoring seven runs in the first three innings of the game. They scored four more in the top of the fourth inning by taking advantage of errors made by the Ave Maria defense to bring their total to 11 runs. The Gyrenes were able to tag on three unanswered runs of their own, making it an 11-3 game.
Dawson earned her sixth win of the season, pitching four innings while giving up four hits, three runs, one walk and struck out one batter.
Game two was a similar story for Eckerd as they scored in every inning but the fifth. The Tritons continued to take advantage of the misplays that were made by the Gyrene defense, scoring seven unearned runs in the top of the third inning. Ave Maria scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth from a base hit up the middle to bring the final score to 14-1.
Alex Sasso was the victorious pitcher in game two, only giving up two hits and striking out four batters. Logan Rorhach made her second appearance of the day in game two, striking out a batter of her own, giving up our hits, one run, and walking one batter.
Docking led the way for the Tritons, as she collected five hits in eight at bats and crossed the plate six times for the Tritons. Kirsten Cox also excelled at the plate, having four hits with four runs batted in. Sarah Agnew batted .571 on the day, collecting four hits and four runs while Sasso batted in six runs.
The Tritons will return to action Friday evening as they take on Florida Tech in Sunshine State Conference action at the Turley Athletic Complex. First pitch is set to be thrown at 7:00 pm.
